Epileptic surfer fights for life
08.09.2010
A 20-YEAR-OLD surfer is in a critical condition after suffering a suspected seizure in the surf at Maroochydore yesterday. The man was found unconscious in the water by other surfers about 11.30am just south of the Maroochydore lifeguard tower.
Surfers saw the man in distress and rushed to his aid.
Two Maroochydore lifeguards joined the rescue and were believed to have brought the unconscious man in on a board, according to Sunshine Coast Lifeguard Services manager Scott Braby.
The two lifeguards were joined by a third lifeguard from Alexandra Headland in the rescue operation.
Mr Braby said the man was known to suffer from epilepsy.
He said the man could not be revived at first despite the best efforts of lifeguards.
"Paramedics arrived and joined in CPR efforts," Mr Braby said.
"He regained consciousness some time after that."
The surfer was taken to Nambour General Hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said he remained in a critical condition last night.
