Lifeguards eye new season
31.08.2010
TWEED lifeguards have been sharpening their skills in a bid to keep beachgoers safe this holiday season.
Northern New South Wales Lifeguard co-ordinator Scott McCartney said 23 lifeguards took part in proficiency training over the weekend.
"The holiday period starts in Tweed on September 25 and finishes on October 10," Mr McCartney said.
"We held proficiency training to get all the lifeguards up to speed and refresh their skills after the off-season."
Mr McCartney said the Tweed lifeguards brought their A game to the training sessions.
"It was held at Kingscliff and it was a good day; everybody did very well," Mr McCartney said.
"Mainly there were veterans at the training, but we did have two or three new faces there."
Mr McCartney said Tweed residents will be in safe hands during the holiday period.
"We have a lot of experienced and very highly qualified lifeguards, so hopefully this will be a good season," Mr McCartney said.
"They have all worked very hard."
Mr McCartney warned Tweed residents to take care while visiting the beach.
"My advice would be to gain as much knowledge of the beach as possible, whether it is your local beach or one you are just visiting," Mr McCartney said. "Beaches can look safe but they can also turn dangerous in a second."
