Drowning may prompt more danger signs

09.04.2010

The Shoalhaven council will consider putting additional warning signs at a New South Wales south coast beach where two people have drowned.

A Sydney man died at Mollymook Beach this week at an unpatrolled area known as 'the reef', where another man died in 2008.

Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club wants the council to place signs directing people to the patrolled area at the south of the beach.

Shoalhaven Mayor Paul Green says he understands families are attracted to the section of the beach because it is accessible.

"If our road finishes at a certain part of the beach it allows people to sort of think, 'let's go for a dip here', and we've got a fatality there previously, [so] I think it's probably getting to the stage where we can put up a sign," he said.

"I would be suggesting that we start to think about putting something at the bottom of the flags as well, like core flutes suggesting not to go outside those areas or that there are rips and dangerous conditions."
