Snorkeller dies after slipping from rocks
06.04.2010
A MAN has drowned after slippingfrom rocks during a snorkelling
trip to Cape Nelson in Victoria's
far south-west.
It's believed the man, 68, had
been snorkelling near the Cape
Nelson lighthouse with a 38-yearold
man and two 17-year-old boys
when he slipped and fell about
3.15pm, Ambulance Victoria
spokesman John Mullen said.
"The 68-year-old man slipped
from the rocks. hit his head and
was knocked unconscious," Mr
Mullen said.
The 38-year-old man entered
the water to try to rescue the
older man. Both were plucked
from the water by a passing
crayfish boat, Mr Mullen said.
"They performed CPR on the
man on the way back to Portland,"
he said. "They met the water
police on the way to port, and one
of the police officers continued
CPR but the man died."
The 38-year-old man was uninjured.
Meantime, State Emergency
Service members climbed down
the rocks at Cape Nelson to
rescue the 17-year-old boys.
They were taken to Portland
Hospital suffering from shock and
exposure, Mr Mullen said.
The relationship between the
four people is unknown.
Police will prepare a report for
the coroner.
