Man in shock after ray sting
25.01.2010
ON a scale of one to 10, an OceanShores holiday maker rated his
pain as an eight after he was
stung by what was believed to be
a sting ray last Monday.
The 55-year-old man had been
swimming at Corindi Beach last
Monday afternoon at 4.15pm.
Lifeguards Matthew Chase
and Kate Sullivan were on duty
when the man limped out of the
water, supported by his wife.
Matthew said the wound on
the right foot was bleeding and
was extremely painful.
"He was in severe pain, he was
losing consciousness and he was
in a state of shock," the lifeguard
said. Matthew and Kate cleaned
the wound, wrapped it with a
pressure bandage and, as the
man was in extreme pain, administered
Penthrox analgesia
through an inhaler.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter
landed on the headland and a
doctor and paramedic arrived at
the scene and were able to administer
more pain relief until a
4WD ambulance came onto the
beach and took the man to the
Coffs Harbour Health Campus.
The man was able to go home
by 5.45pm that night.
